The anthology has the working title of ‘The Valley Press Anthology of Prose Poetry’ and will be co-edited by myself and Oz Hardwick.   The stories range from fantasy to horror to fairy-tale retellings, but they’re all tied together through Lanagan’s imaginative prose and off-kilter ideas. She masterfully reworks “The Soldier and the Tin Book” and “Rapunzel” to bring something both . Since this is an anthology of excerpts over + years, it's hard to give an "overall" rating. Some stuff I liked (Pillow Book, Essays in Idleness, Confessions of Lady Nijo), some things I didn't (sorry, Basho).The tone and pacing of the early stuff (Tales of Ise, Kokinshu) really reminded me a lot of Edward Gorey.4/5.

With ordinary prose books, the fact that Kindle readers can resize text is not a problem, since prose books often have very simple formatting. This much-needed anthology of short prose is sure to become a classic. In researching this volume, Alan Ziegler has cast his net wide to collect samples of short-form prose from different eras and different parts of the world/5(24).
